Sintra and its mystical hills with numerous fairy tale palaces and exquisite villas have amazed its visitors throughout the centuries.
Romans set here a place of worship to goddess Cynthia, the goddess of the moon. They have been followed by the Moors, that also fell in love with its exuberant vegetation and built a castle there, a palace and several fountains along the town.
Later on, Sintra became the summer residence of the Portuguese royal family and also appealed many rich aristocrats which have built huge manors, mansions and villas.
During morning we will visit the spectacular Pena Palace and its park which stands on the highest peaks of the Serra de Sintra, and it was an idea of Fernando II an absolute imaginative genius.
This eclectic medley of architectural styles represents the maximum exponent of the 19th century Romanticism. Palace stands over the ruins of a 16th century Hieronymite monastery and has been conceived in a way that can be seen from every area of the Park, whose trees and exuberant gardens host more than five hundred species of trees from all over the world.
Then brief stop at Sintra’s historical centre for the coffee-break where you will have the chance to taste the local typical pastry. Free time for lunch (not included).
After lunch, we head along to Cabo da Roca, the most westerly point of the European mainland and of all Euroasia. It was known by Romans as the Promontorium Magnum and during the Discoveries era it was known as the Roca de Lisboa.
We continue along the coast, passing the famous Guincho beach. We then reach Cascais, with its Boca do Inferno wave waterspout and the magnificent panorama out over the Bay of Cascais and the coast.
