Visit Kazakh families living in traditional Gers — larger than typical Mongolian gers and richly adorned with handmade carpets and vibrant textiles. Over tea, enjoy Kazakh dishes such as Kuz (salted and smoked horse meat) and Bisbarmak.
Meet with a family that practices eagle hunting. For more than 2,000 years, Kazakhs have trained Golden Eagles — always females for their size — to hunt foxes and wolves. After years of service, these majestic birds are released back into the wild.
Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner. Overnight at Hotel Bastau Inn or similar.
(150 km off-road driving)
Breakfast. Scenic 5–6 hour drive through breathtaking landscapes to the Tsagaan River Valley.
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park: a pristine wilderness of 636,161 hectares along the western edge of Bayan-Olgii Province. At its heart stands Khuiten Uul, the tallest mountain in Mongolia (4,374 m). The park follows the Altai Mountain Range for over 200 km, where Mongolia meets China, Russia and Kazakhstan. Hidden among its rocky surfaces are tens of thousands of ancient petroglyphs — a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Visit and connect with a local Tuvan family. The Tsagaan River Valley is a cherished summer grazing ground for nomadic herders and a sacred space for the Tuvan people, who practice age-old Shamanistic traditions.
Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner. Overnight in simple Gers/Yurts (no shower or flush toilet; 4–6 people per ger).
(150 km off-road driving)
Breakfast. Return drive to Olgii through stunning mountain landscapes.
Explore Olgii, the capital of Bayan-Olgii Province, perched at 1,710 m above sea level. Visit the Olgii Museum, dedicated to the rich history, art and traditions of the Kazakh people. Browse the bustling local market for local craftsmanship and daily life.
Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner. Overnight at Hotel Bastau Inn or similar.
Breakfast. Drive 45 km to beautiful Tolbo Lake, a freshwater lake at 2,100 m altitude, surrounded by mountains, rolling hills and vast steppes. The crystal-clear waters reflect surrounding peaks — a paradise for photographers and nature enthusiasts.
The Eagle Festival: Eagle hunters celebrate their heritage and compete with specially trained Golden Eagles. Eagles chase fox skin dragged by its owner on horseback (live hunting no longer practiced at festivals). Prizes awarded for speed, agility and accuracy.
Festivities include an opening ceremony, impressive parade, cultural exhibitions, demonstrations and handicrafts, followed by sporting activities: camel racing, archery, the Kiz Kuar woman-chasing game, the Tinge Lu coin-snatching competition, and Kokbar — goatskin tug-of-war on horseback.
Hunters compete in full eagle hunting outfits on groomed, decorated horses.
Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner. Overnight at Hotel Bastau Inn or similar.
