Awesome Algiers – With Ghardaia 05 days

Tour Details

Africa’s largest country lies just a short hop from Europe. The north, with its snow-flecked mountains and stunning coastline, is home to urbane and charismatic cities such as Algiers and Constantine, as well as some of the most magnificent Roman sites in existence including Timgad and Djemila, both vast, perfectly preserved Roman towns with barely another tourist in sight.

Algeria’s other big draw is its extraordinary Saharan region. Whether it’s a glimpse of the sand seas that surround Timimoun, or the burnt-red mountains of the far south, these are the desert landscapes of legend.

But, for all its peach-coloured dunes and grand ruins, it’s perhaps the Algerians themselves, who welcome visitors with warmth and curiosity, that are the real highlight of this nation. For accessible adventure and a complex, enthralling cultural odyssey, head for Algeria.

The picturesque city of Ghardaia is located in the Gharadaia Province of Algeria and is situated approximately three hundred and seventy miles outside of Algiers. It is a historical city that was established in the eleventh century. Its structures and buildings have survived for centuries and the city has remained true to its ancient cultures and traditions, maintaining its uniqueness through urban planning; thus, the Ghardaia Province was recognized in 1982 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

A truly unique experience in the Algerian centre.

Day 3 – 20Sep – Ghardaïa’s Ksar

Breakfast at the residence, followed by a visit of Ghardaïa’s Ksar.

Ghardaïa, chief town of the Mʾzab Oasis, north-central Algeria. It lies along the left bank of the Wadi Mzab in the northern Sahara (desert). Founded in the 11th century, it was built around the cave (ghār) reputedly inhabited by the female saint Daïa (the cave is still venerated by Mʾzabite women).

Ghardaïa is a fortified town with white and red clay houses that rise in terraces and arcades toward the pyramid-style mosque at its centre. It is divided into three walled sectors. At the core is the Mʾzabite section, built around the mosque and an arcaded square.

The traditional Jewish quarter, with its many wells and craft shops, lies to the east, and the Medabian quarter is to the northwest.

The city is surrounded by the Sahara Desert, the Wadi Mzab and the M’zab Valley. Locals in Ghardaia still practice traditional agricultural farming to earn a living. The city boasts an estimated sixty thousand palm trees, on which locals are dependant for dates. No trees are cut down in the city as locals believe they are living forms, so wood is only used for roofing and other crafts once a tree has died. This oasis has also been a popular trading post for centuries, with nomads and traders moving through the city. But there is one craft that the city is famous for, and that is carpet making.

They weave their unique carpets from goat hair and their patterns are geometric and simple, but absolute masterpieces. Generally, the carpets are black and white, but with the annual Ghardaia Carpet Festival each year, it has become a contest amongst the best carpet weavers.

Lunch at the residence.

Afternoon visit to excursion to the sand dunes of El Mansourah (60 km from Ghardaïa) for a desert experience.

Return to the residence for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5 – 22Sep - Tipaza

One of Algeria’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, on the shores of the Mediterranean, Tipaza was an ancient Punic trading-post conquered by Rome and turned into a strategic base for the conquest of the kingdoms of Mauritania.

It comprises a unique group of Phoenician, Roman, palaeochristian and Byzantine ruins alongside indigenous monuments such as the Kbor er Roumia, the great royal mausoleum of Mauritania.

Lunch optional and free

On the way back to Algiers, we will stop at the Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania.

The Royal Mauretanian Mausoleum on the western Mediterranean coast, 12 km from Tipasa. This royal burial has been attributed to Bocchus and dates back to the 1st century BC. Its construction technique is Berber but the exterior cladding is Punic.

End of the day, late evening, transfer to the airport for your departure flight.

Weather:

Algeria is the largest country on the African continent, 80% of which is occupied by the largest desert on earth – the Sahara. The length of the coastline of Algeria is quite impressive too – as much as 998 km.

Having at its disposal a rather large territory, the natural world of Algeria is very diverse, and includes: plains, deserts and semi-deserts, including sandy and stony, the highlands of Ahaggar, and also the Atlas Mountains.

The climate of Algeria in the northern part of the country is subtropical Mediterranean, in the central and southern parts of the country it’s a tropical desert.

The climate is changing from north to south. On the Mediterranean coast, the climate is more comfortable for living, it has a moderately warm, humid winter and a hot summer. And the central and southern parts of Algeria are more severe – the Sahara Desert lies here, where it’s very dry and very hot for almost a year, besides huge sandstorms often rise here. Features of desert areas are very sharp fluctuations in air temperatures during day and night. The climate of northern Sahara is determined by stable high-pressure cells located above the Northern Tropics.

Autumn in Algeria, in the northern part of the country, begins in early October. The first half of the month, as a rule, is sunny and quite comfortable for rest, from the middle of October the real autumn comes on the coast, the sky is clouded with low clouds, rains can pass, but this happens infrequently. In the central part of the country, there are practically no rains in October, and the air temperature here is higher, of the order of + 20 °C in the daytime. November continues the trend of October with a decrease in the average air temperature, on average, to + 15 °C, the weather in November, as a rule, is not pleasant, it’s pretty cloudy, and the rains are coming.

Required clothing
Cotton and linen lightweights are best for winter months and for evenings in desert areas. Woollens and light rainwear are advised for the winter along the coast and the Hauts Plateaux. Remember that desert temperatures can drop very low during the night, so don’t get caught out with only flimsy layers. South of the Sahara, from mid December to mid-January, temperatures drop and warm clothes are necessary both in the morning and the evening. A mountain sleeping bag is also required when camping.

.

Currency:

The currency in Algeria is the Dinar. Dinar (DZD) = 100 centimes. Notes are in denominations of DZD1,000, 500, 200, 100 and 50. Coins are in denominations of DZD100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1, and 50, 20, 1O, 5 and 1 centimes.

Note: Because of the very strict adherence of the authorities to these regulations, visitors are strongly advised not to be associated with the black market, which tends to concentrate on the Euro and portable electronics.

Credit cards are generally only accepted in urban areas. Payment in cash is always preferred.

ATM – here are two or three functioning ATMs in Algiers, but they cannot be relied upon and there is black market for currency exchange.

ln the past, difficulties have arisen when trying to exchange currency in Algeria, with only one national bank (La Banque Extérieure d’Algérie) able to exchange foreign currency at branches in major business centres. Difficulties are now decreasing and it is possible, for example, to exchange currency at some of the larger hotels. However, the facilities for currency exchange remain quite limited.
