Tour Details

The island nation of Cape Verde is just under 400 miles off the coast of Africa and is made up of over a dozen islands and islets of vertigo-inducing mountains, crystal blue and white sandy beaches, and seaside villages. The geologic origins of the island chain are from a volcanic hot spot deep in the Atlantic, creating steep craggy mountains and dramatic landscapes

Uninhabited until the 1500’s when Portuguese explorers first discovered the island and used its strategic location for cross-Atlantic trade, the population has rarely exceeded 500,000 people and the majority creole ancestry is of European and West African descent.

The Cape Verde islands are a place of great contrasts, extremely diverse, with each of the 10 islands offering a different experience. Fortunately, most of these islands are packed with things to do and are becoming increasingly popular for tourists. From hiking up an active volcano to learning to kite surf, relaxing and chilling.

São Vicente
Mindelo is the capital of São Vicente and also the culture capital of Cape Verde. Cesaria Evora’s hometown…. This means, a lot of art, music and nightlife. The waters around Sao Vicente are famous for the blue marlin (fish). The landscape of Sao Vicente is barren with brown-red mountains and valleys. In the southwest and east of the island you have beautiful beaches with white sand coming from the Sahara.

Santo Antão
Do not forget you hiking shoes if you visit Santo Antão. This is the paradise for hikers with beautiful trails through the stunning mountains and green valleys. You will find here unspoiled nature, high mountains, impressive cliffs and fairytale-like villages like Fontainhas, inhabited by a population whose kindness and good humour will make you live an unforgettable and timeless experience.
The number of adventure sports and luxury resort hotels is limited. Santo Antao can be reached by ferry.

Weather:

A pleasantly tropical destination, the Cape Verde islands benefit from average annual temperatures of between 24°C and 30°C. Holidays to Cape Verde offer long, uninterrupted sunshine hours and low humidity, meaning many people return time and time again. And, with higher winds between November and March, larger waves can be found on some of the islands, which proves particularly popular with water sport enthusiasts.

Cape Verde has a subtropical and dry climate. On average Cape Verde has year-round beautiful weather and the trade wind cools the islands making lying in the sun on one of the beaches more tolerable. With a fairly constant temperature between the islands and averages between 25 and 30 degrees, it makes the overall climate of the Cape Verde islands very pleasant. The geographical location of the islands has also a positive effect on the sea temperature. Perfect for water sports! On average the seawater temperature is at 25 degrees.

During the summer (July – September) it is normally the hottest time with the most rain days of the year in Cape Verde. In the summer the temperature is high and there is little wind. In the period between October and June it is dry season, with more wind and more pleasant temperatures (cooler evenings).

Currency:

The currency in the Cape Verde islands is the escudo. The currency is abbreviated with the $ sign after the number (e.g., $ 1,000$) or by the letters CVE.

The Cape Verde Escudo is linked to the euro and is worth 110,265. Round off 1 euro is 110 CVE. An easy rate if you want to convert money.
In short, if you want an indication of how much something costs in euros you divide the amount in escudos by 100 and you will subtract another 10% of that amount.
Or a simpler explanation: get two zeros off the amount (1,000 CVE then 10 euros) and get another 10% off (10 euros minus 10% = 9 euros).

Exchange offices / hotels may differ slightly from the rate.

Paper money is available in: 200, 500, 1,000, 2,000 and 5,000 escudos. The 2,000-escudo banknote depicts the world-renowned music icon Cesaria Evora. The coin money has the value of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 escudos

Credit cards are accepted by a large number of hotels, restaurants and shops. However, there is a difference between the region and the different islands. So it is wiser not to reckon on it. That way you will never be in trouble. Credit cards can also be used at a cash machine. Bank cards with a Visa, Maestro, Cirrus or Mastercard logo are can be used at ATM’s. With each withdrawal of money, transaction costs are automatically deducted. It is a maximum of a few euros at a time. The ATM’s can be found at the major banks of the country (BCA and BCN).
