Starting at Fóia — the highest point in the Algarve at 921 metres above sea level — this guided walk offers some of the most panoramic views in all of Portugal. On a clear day, you can see both the west and south coasts stretching out before you.
The route descends through a rich tapestry of landscapes: from open mountain heathland dotted with wildflowers, into shaded forests of eucalyptus and ancient cork oaks. The path is mostly downhill and well-marked, making it accessible to those with a basic level of fitness.
Midway through the hike, stop beside a clear, fast-flowing mountain stream — a perfect spot to rest, enjoy a snack and take in the sounds of nature. The final stretch leads into the heart of Monchique, a charming traditional town known for its Moorish character, artisan workshops and the nearby thermal spa waters of Caldas de Monchique.

Meet at your pickup point in Lagos, Portimão or Lagoa and travel together to Fóia at the top of the Serra de Monchique mountain range. Alternatively, if arriving independently, meet at the Fóia car park.
Begin your walk at the highest point in the Algarve. Take in breathtaking panoramic views stretching across both the west and south coasts.
