Awesome Algeria – Constantine, Tamanrasset Djanet & Sebeiba Festival

Tour Details

Africa’s largest country lies just a short hop from Europe. The north, with its snow-flecked mountains and stunning coastline, is home to urbane and charismatic cities such as Algiers and Constantine, as well as some of the most magnificent Roman sites in existence including Timgad and Djemila, both vast, perfectly preserved Roman towns with barely another tourist in sight.

Algeria’s other big draw is its extraordinary Saharan region. Whether it’s a glimpse of the sand seas that surround Timimoun, or the burnt-red mountains of the far south, these are the desert landscapes of legend.

But, for all its peach-coloured dunes and grand ruins, it’s perhaps the Algerians themselves, who welcome visitors with warmth and curiosity, that are the real highlight of this nation. For accessible adventure and a complex, enthralling cultural odyssey, head for Algeria.

Traveling to Constantine, Algeria, offers a journey into an ancient “City of Bridges” perched dramatically on cliffs, known for its historic viaducts (like Sidi M’Cid), Roman ruins day trips (Djemila, Timgad), vibrant markets, and blend of cultures, requiring visa awareness, modest dress, and learning basic French/Arabic for a richer experience amidst stunning landscapes and rich history.

Timgad, a UNESCO World Heritage List, lies on the northern slopes of the Aurès mountains and was created ex nihilo as a military colony by the Emperor Trajan in AD 100. With its square enclosure and orthogonal design based on the cardo and decumanus, the two perpendicular routes running through the city, it is an excellent example of Roman town planning.

Sebeiba is the term used in Algeria to designate a festival and the Tuareg people’s dance performed on this occasion and accompanied by female drummers in the Sahara oasis of Djanet in the Tassili n’Ajjer region in southern Algeria. The dance originated among the descendants of black African slaves and is part of the celebrations for the Islamic Ashura Festival. The dance was recognized by UNESCO in 2014 for its significance to humanity’s intangible cultural heritage.

A truly unique experience in the Algerian south.

Day 2 – 23Jun – Algiers - Constantine

Early morning flight to Constantine at 0700, with the arrival at 0800.
Transfer to the hotel, followed by a day visit of Constantine

Constantine is probably the most amazing city in all of Algeria. Filled with ancient history, natural beauty and some of the most dramatic landscapes I’ve ever seen, Constantine is definitely a highlight of North Africa. Built among dramatic ravines and cliffs, bridges are an essential part of both the city’s infrastructure and soul.

One of the biggest cultural sites in Constantine is the Ahmed Bey Palace. The Beys of Constantine ruled over the city for centuries, beginning from 1528 until the end of Ahmed Bey’s ruling in 1837. Ahmed Bey actually created this large complex, which has four large courtyards and more rooms than I can remember.

Dinner is free
Overnight at the hotel.

Day 3 – 24Jun – Timgad – Djanet

Early breakfast. Drive to Timgad, which takes approximately 2h45min.

Timgad, the African Pompeii, originally known as Thamugadi, is not just another pile of rocks. It is the clearest example of Roman urban planning in the entire world.
For history enthusiasts and adventurous travellers, a visit to Timgad is an unforgettable journey back to the height of the Roman Empire.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982, Timgad’s exceptional state of preservation allows you to walk its original stone-paved streets and experience a city that vividly illustrates the grandeur of Rome on Numidian soil.

Return to Constantine for dinner and then transfer to the airport.

Transfer to the Hotel Zeriba.

Day 7 – 28Jun - Tamanrasset – Assekrem

Arrival in Tamanrasset at 0200, welcome at the airport and transfer to your hotel.
Comfortable overnight stay at the hotel.

Breakfast at the hotel.

Tamanrasset is an oasis city deep in Saharan Algeria. It is the capital of Tamanrasset Province, in the Ahaggar Mountains, and has a population of around 100,000 people. From its towering dunes to its traditional Berber villages, Tamanrasset is an excellent place to explore the Sahara Desert and its many attractions.

Departure by 4×4 to the Afilale Gueltas, natural oasis with crystal-clear waters surrounded by lush vegetation. Lunch on the way, then drive to the spectacular highlands of the Hoggar Tassili and the breathtaking Assekrem plateau.

In the heart of the Hoggar massif is a dramatic cluster of eroded volcanic cores overlooked by the 9000-foot high Assekrem Pass, part of the Ahaggar National Park.

Ascent to the Hermitage of Father de Foucauld, a site rich in history and spirituality. In the early 20th century Charles de Foucauld, a French bon viveur and soldier turned missionary, built a crude stone hermitage on this plateau.

Admire one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world—an unforgettable moment in the Saharan landscape.

Dinner and overnight stay at the Assekrem refuge.

One of Algeria’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, on the shores of the Mediterranean, Tipaza was an ancient Punic trading-post conquered by Rome and turned into a strategic base for the conquest of the kingdoms of Mauritania. It comprises a unique group of Phoenician, Roman, palaeochristian and Byzantine ruins alongside indigenous monuments such as the Kbor er Roumia, the great royal mausoleum of Mauritania.

On the way back to Algiers, we will stop at the Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania. The Royal Mauretanian Mausoleum on the western Mediterranean coast, 12 km from Tipasa. This royal burial has been attributed to Bocchus and dates back to the 1st century BC. Its construction technique is Berber but the exterior cladding is Punic.

Weather:

Algeria is the largest country on the African continent, 80% of which is occupied by the largest desert on earth – the Sahara.

Having at its disposal a rather large territory, the natural world of Algeria is very diverse, and includes: plains, deserts and semi-deserts, including sandy and stony, the highlands of Ahaggar, and also the Atlas Mountains.

The climate of Algeria in the northern part of the country is subtropical Mediterranean, in the central and southern parts of the country it’s a tropical desert.

The climate is changing from north to south. On the Mediterranean coast, the climate is more comfortable for living, it has a moderately warm, humid winter and a hot summer. And the central and southern parts of Algeria are more severe – the Sahara Desert lies here, where it’s very dry and very hot for almost a year, besides huge sandstorms often rise here. Features of desert areas are very sharp fluctuations in air temperatures during day and night. The climate of northern Sahara is determined by stable high-pressure cells located above the Northern Tropics.

Required clothing
Cotton and linen lightweights are best for winter months and for evenings in desert areas. Woollens and light rainwear are advised for the winter along the coast and the Hauts Plateaux. Remember that desert temperatures can drop very low during the night, so don’t get caught out with only flimsy layers. South of the Sahara, from mid December to mid-January, temperatures drop and warm clothes are necessary both in the morning and the evening. A mountain sleeping bag is also required when camping.

Loose, long clothes in natural fabrics are recommended. A cover-up for the cooler months is advisable. Warm clothing for nights in the desert. Modest dress is advised, especially for women – upper legs and arms, shoulders and cleavage should be covered.

A headscarf can be useful as extra coverage, and is essential for visiting mosques, cemeteries or other sites that bear religious significance.

Currency:

The currency in Algeria is the Dinar. Dinar (DZD) = 100 centimes. Notes are in denominations of DZD1,000, 500, 200, 100 and 50. Coins are in denominations of DZD100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1, and 50, 20, 1O, 5 and 1 centimes.

Note: Because of the very strict adherence of the authorities to these regulations, visitors are strongly advised not to be associated with the black market, which tends to concentrate on the Euro and portable electronics.

Credit cards are generally only accepted in urban areas. Payment in cash is always preferred.
ATM – here are two or three functioning ATMs in Algiers, but they cannot be relied upon and there is black market for currency exchange.

ln the past, difficulties have arisen when trying to exchange currency in Algeria, with only one national bank (La Banque Extérieure d’Algérie) able to exchange foreign currency at branches in major business centres. Difficulties are now decreasing and it is possible, for example, to exchange currency at some of the larger hotels. However, the facilities for currency exchange remain quite limited.

Tipping
A tip of 10-15% is normal.

Health/Vaccination:

Passengers can enter Algeria without restriction if they are fully vaccinated and if their last vaccine is not older than 9 months. Non-vaccinated passengers and those whose vaccinations are older than 9 months must have a negative PCR test within 72 hours of the time of arrival. We recommend that you check with the Algerian authorities on further entry requirements, including vaccination and quarantine.

Yellow fever
Yellow fever vaccination certificate required for travellers aged 1 year or over arriving from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission and for travellers having transited more than 12 hours through the airport of a country with risk of yellow fever transmission.

Vaccination against hepatitis B and tuberculosis is sometimes advised. Rabies is present.
For those at high risk, vaccination before arrival should be considered. lf you are bitten, seek medical help without delay.
There is little to no risk of malaria.
Algeria’s climate is dry and hot, so wearing sunscreen and a hat to shield from midday sun, is advised, as is having drinking water with you.
