Tour Details

Socotra (Soqotra) (Arabic: سقطرى Suquṭra) is one of the most special places on earth. It is a group of islands in the Indian Ocean (Asia) that is part of Yemen. There are also almost no tourists so it gives you the chance to immerse yourself in peace and quiet of the white beaches and Arabian ocean.

Socotra separated from the Middle East or from Africa a few million years ago and started to live its own life. There are 305 endemic plant and tree species, species that only occur on the island The population (mainly based on the main island) lives mainly from livestock farming and fishing.

When you enter Socotra through the air you immediately see the high mountains. Making this the perfect region for walking. Not only the trained people, but also the inexperienced hiker can enjoy themselves. It is recommended to go with a guide, because he or she knows which paths to take. From the mountains you have a beautiful view of the special surroundings of Socotra.

The Socotri language (spoken, not written) is one of the oldest living members of the Modern South Arabian languages. It is unique, poetic, and incredibly complex. It has no standardized script, and today, fewer and fewer children speak it fluently. UNESCO lists it as “severely endangered.” When a language disappears, so does a whole way of seeing the world. On Socotra, efforts are rising to record stories and songs before they are lost forever.

One of the most unique places on earth, an unforgettable experience….

Weather:

The climate is a tropical desert climate. There is not much rain, most of it falls in November and December. In the monsoon the wind is very strong and the seas are high. The best time to visit is from mid-October to mid-May. Outside this time the strong winds prevent flights from going to the island.

Socotra has high temperatures all year round ranging between 27°C and 35°C.
May has an average maximum temperature of 35°C and is the warmest month of the year. The coldest month is February with an average maximum temperature of 27°C (81°F).
December tops the wettest month list with 83mm of rainfall. July is the driest month with 0mm of precipitation.

The best and really only time you can visit Socotra is from September to May. This is when the weather is most stable. In the summer months the sea winds pick up and it can make travel very difficult there. Flights are also frequently cancelled from June to August.

Though Socotra is quite laid-back for a place with a predominantly Islamic culture, it is still largely Muslim & conservative. One-piece swimsuits for ladies and long swimming shorts for men are recommended. Women should carry scarves with them just in case it’s necessary to cover up. Socotra is hot all year-round. Light-coloured, breathable clothing is recommended, as are hats, sunglasses and sunblock. Your tour will inevitably involve hiking, so bring sturdy shoes/boots and a water canteen.

Currency:

The currency used in Socotra is the Yemeni Rial (YR).
There are about 250 Rials to one USD and 296 Rials to one EURO (currency converter)

On your arrival, you have the opportunity to change some money into Yemeni Riyal at the National Bank and CAC banck in Hadibo, Socotra.  Credit Cards and cheques are not accepted in Socotra and therefore you will need to bring cash with you (USD is well accepted on the island, with EURO as an alternative).
Meals and drinking water are included on tours to the Yemeni island. Aside from snacks and soft drinks, you’re unlikely to be spending too much. The aforementioned snacks and soft drinks will set you back $1-2 a pop

Vaccination:

Socotra is currently free of malaria, so use of malaria prophylactics is not recommended.  However, as mosquitoes occur locally, we do recommend to use insect repellent when sitting outside after sunset.

Cholera is not present on the island at all.
Consult your doctor and dentist or travel health clinic for advice and preventive measures.
The hospitals on the island only offer basic medical services.
Pharmacies are presented around Hadibo.

Is it safe to visit Socotra?

Extremely safe! The conflict in mainland Yemen hasn’t spilled over to the island, and there is virtually no danger at all. Though standard vigilance should be exercised with regards to one’s belongings (as with anywhere) it’s highly unlikely that you’ll be the victim of even petty theft.

Trip Highlights:

  • Witness the otherworldly Dragon’s Blood trees and trek through Socotra’s primordial landscapes.
  • Dive into vibrant coral reefs and swim alongside wild dolphins in the pristine Arabian Sea.
